We’ve been exploring the Gunflint Trail and North Shore for many decades and decided to volunteer after many years of showing off Chik-Wauk to visiting family and friends. It was time to give back to a wonderful organization!

I have spent time on the Gunflint Trail most years since 1945.  Consequently, I have experienced the Trail when it was only a rough gravel road, as well as when it was challenged by a severe blowdown and fires.  Through all its changes, my family and I continue to be blessed by the Gunflint Trail’s people, glacial lakes, Boreal forests, and access to a protected wilderness.  To serve as a volunteer for Chik-Wauk gives me the privilege and opportunity to give something back – to inspire others to appreciate this area’s beauty, opportunity for adventure, and unique history.

I volunteer to gain knowledge of the history of the Gunflint Trail and Wilderness area. I enjoy sharing the history, nature, animals and the stories of the folks who have or are living on the Gunflint Trail. I believe in sharing this glimpse of long ago, and the present and future of living in this unique area. I volunteer to help ensure that it continues to be treated with respect and gratitude.

When I come to work in the Nature Center, I always learn something new about the natural world. Which is great fun. But mostly I enjoy visiting with folks who are new to the North Shore and Gunflint Trail and hearing their reactions to our beautiful Boreal Forest and amazing Lakes.
